Matsushima (Miyagi)

Matsushima (Japanese松 岛 町, machi, dt " Pine Islands " ) is a small town in the Japanese prefecture of Miyagi.

Attractions

  • Zuigan -ji (瑞 巌 寺), the temple was founded in 828 and rebuilt in 1610, which belongs to the Rinzai direction of Zen, one of the most famous in Tohoku.
  • Godaido (五 大堂), a Buddhist prayer hall, the " enlightened Five Kings" (五大 明王, Godai myōō ) dedicated, located on an island that can be reached directly from the shore by a bridge.
  • The place is right on the Matsushima Bay, the main attraction of the prefecture. It is a bay with about 260 pine covered islands, 22 km north-east of Sendai. Besides Amanohashidate Miyajima and Matsushima is one of the three most beautiful landscapes of Japan, which has made its beaches and the nearby historical sites to respective strongholds of tourism. - Due to their special beauty of the Bay of Matsushima has also found its way into the classical Japanese literature: the poet Matsuo Bashō dedicated to the bay of Matsushima in his travel journal Oku no hosomichi a separate chapter. The place advertises a haiku, " Matsushima ya | Matsushima ya aa | Matsushima ya" which, however, does not come from Bashō.

Tohoku Earthquake

On 11 March 2011 the city was hit by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Until May 20 2 dead and 2 missing were counted.
