Matteo I. Visconti

Matteo I. Visconti ( born August 15, 1250 Invorio, † June 24, 1322 in crescenzago ) from the family of Visconti succeeded his uncle, the Archbishop Ottone Visconti as a political leader Milan. Although a riot of della Torre in 1302 forced him to flee to Verona, he brought his steadfast loyalty to the imperial cause in Italy the thanks of Henry VII (reigned 1308-1313 ), the re-establishment in Milan in 1311 and the Office of the Imperial Vicar of Lombardy a. He brought Piacenza, Tortona, Pavia, Bergamo, Vercelli, Alessandria, Cremona, and under his rule. Although an able general, he left for his acquisitions more on diplomacy and bribery, and was regarded as a model of a prudent Italian despot. His persistent Ghibelline politics and his quarrel with Pope John XXII. (reigned 1316-1334 ) on the occupation of the episcopal chair in Milan in 1322 earned him excommunication by the papal legate Bertrand du Pouget one. He thanked in 1322 in favor of his son Galeazzo Visconti I. and died shortly thereafter.

Matteo Visconti was ( † 15 January 1321 ), daughter of Squarcino Borri married since 1269 with Bonacossa. The couple had the following children:
