Matthias Hafenreffer

Matthias Hafenreffer (* June 24, 1561 in Lorch (Württemberg ), † October 22, 1619 in Tübingen ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life and work

Hafenreffer studied philosophy and theology at the University of Tübingen and was Master in 1581, 1583 Repetent. In 1586 he became deacon in Herrenberg, 1588 pastor in Ehningen, 1590 court preacher and consistory in Stuttgart. In 1592 he returned as a professor in Tübingen, where he at the same time as Dr. theol. received his doctorate. He was first and third full professor in 1612 rose for the second, 1618 for the first full professor on. From 1595, he served six times as rector of the university. In 1618 he became Chancellor of the University.

Hafenreffer is considered the first important representative of nachkonkordistischen Lutheran orthodoxy. His " loci theologici ", written in 1600 at the request of Duke Friedrich of Württemberg for the heir to the throne Johann Friedrich found (later greatly expanded ) widespread than dogmatic textbook, not only in the Württemberg church, but also in Sweden. In connection with his studies on the book of Ezekiel chapter. 40-48, he dealt with the quadrature of the circle.

To Hafenreffers students include Johann Valentin Andreae and Johannes Kepler.
