Matthias of Arras

Matthias of Arras (z czech Matyas Arrasu; * 1290 in Arras, France, † 1352 in Prague ) was a French architect and builder who worked in Bohemia.

Life

Matthias of Arras, representatives of the late Gothic French architecture and architect on the papal court in Avignon, was by King John of Luxembourg in 1344 on the recommendation of the Moravian Margrave and later Emperor Charles IV in Prague called for the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral along the lines of cathedrals in Narbonne, Rodez to take over.

The foundation stone was laid on November 21, 1344 and during the eight -year construction period, until his death, he was the conclusion of the choir with the arcades, build the walkway and five chapels and the entire eastern part of the long choir.

1348 he began to build the castle Karlstejn for Charles IV.

His successor as architect of St. Vitus Cathedral was Peter Parler.
