Matthias Richards

Matthias Richards ( born February 26, 1758 Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania; † August 4, 1830 in Reading, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1807 and 1811 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Matthias Richards was the younger brother of Congressman John Richards ( 1753-1822 ). He enjoyed a private school education. During the Revolutionary War he served in the militia of Berks County, in which he brought it up to Major. Between 1788 and 1828 he was among his other activities also justice of the peace in Berks County. Between 1791 and 1797 Richards served there as a district judge. In the years 1801 and 1802, he worked for the customs administration. Politically, he was a member of the end of the 1790s by Thomas Jefferson founded the Democratic-Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1806 Richards was the third electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the meantime deceased Christian Lower on March 4, 1807. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1811 two legislative sessions. In 1810 he gave up another candidacy.

1813 Matthias Richards was head of the tax authority in the ninth tax district of Pennsylvania; in 1823 he was employed by the guardianship court in Berks County. He also worked in retail. At times, he worked as a district judge again. He died on 4 August 1830 in Reading.
