Maximilian Perty

Josef Anton Maximilian Perty ( born September 17, 1804 in Ornbau, Bavaria; † August 8, 1884 in Bern, Switzerland ) was a German entomologist and natural philosopher. He was professor at the University of Bern.

Life

Perty drew as a child (1807 ) to Munich. He attended high school in Munich and Tolz. To study the natural sciences and medicine, he moved to Landshut. In 1824 he became a member of the Corps Isaria. In 1826 he received his doctorate at the University of Landshut MD; but he did not want to work as a general practitioner, but as a scientist.

When the university was moved in 1827 from Landshut to Munich, he worked with the curator and natural philosophers God Help Heinrich von Schubert in the zoological- zootomischen collection of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, which later became the Zoological State Collection Munich. He edited the insects that Johann Baptist von Spix (1781 - 1826) was collected on a journey together with Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius 1817-1820 in Brazil. This Perty 622 described insect species, including 308 species of beetles. He worked at first without, then with low pay, but without permanent employment. Perty was indeed supported by Martius, yet did not get the desired job in the academy. He gave lectures for young zoologists. Habilitated in 1831, could now keep as a private lectures. The end of 1833 he moved to Bern, where he became full professor in 1834 the newly founded university. Perty published, among other things rotifers ( Rotifera ), infusoria, beetles ( Coleoptera) and bees. In 1861 he became a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
