It was purchased in 1723 by the British Minister Robert Jackson, which is why it is also called Engelska Huset ( the English House ). By 1888 the building served as a poorhouse. In 1900 the city of Stockholm bought the house. Today it houses a restaurant, offices and homes.

The genesis of the square is related to the expansion of the railway to Södra station in the 1850s. The course was built and planned to there to offer the incoming with the railways People agricultural products. The place was called Södra Bantorget, ie Southern Railway Square in 1876. Some years earlier, its counterpart, the Norra Bantorget, ie the Northern Railway Square, was built near Stockholm Central Station.

In 1936 it was proposed to rename the place in Medborgarplatsen, as subsequently occurred on 17 December 1940. After renaming the place the name of the metro station was initially maintained. Only in 1944 the station was renamed to its present name.

In 1950, the station was rebuilt to give the new, longer subway trains space. However, it was not ready in time for the intended start on October 1 and was therefore opened on 1 November 1950. The fortifications, which at that time held the contact lines for the trams are still visible on the ceiling. Today, the station is served by the green line and is there between the stations Slussen and Skanstull. The distance to Slussen is approximately 600 meters.
