Medeski Martin & Wood

Medeski Martin & Wood ( MMW ) is an American jazz trio that was founded in 1991 under the name Coltrane 's Wig. It consists of John Medeski (keyboards), Billy Martin ( drums) and Chris Wood ( bass).

History

In 1990, John Medeski and Chris Wood learned on a tour of their mutual friend Bob Moses by Israel know. Moses was previously also mentor the drummer Billy Martin, whom he introduced Medeski and Wood after the tour.

On first appearances at the renowned New York jazz club the Village Gate was followed by other gigs at the old Knitting Factory, which was to be found until 1994, still in the Houston Street and quite early (supposedly) knew to blow narrow categories such as jazz or rock. The music magazine Rolling Stone described the club in 1991 as " a synonym for new music." In this respect fits the place to the music of Medeski, Martin and Wood, the forbidding any further definition: "We make something like jazz by being an instrumental group, but we definitely do not play swinging jazz. We are grooving. " ( Medeski ) First, the three musicians denied performances under the name Coltrane 's Wig. A short time later, they rejected this name and contact since then as Medeski, Martin & Wood.

They began a self-organized by the United States to tour and took this one example to Pat Metheny: The Volkswagen bus, they toured the country, playing in rock clubs, cafes and where allowed to play. So they blew up one more time the boundaries of the established jazz operation, but at the same time opened up a new audience.

Her debut album Notes From the Underground took MMW in the months after the tour, and published it on the indie label Hap Jones. A year later, the first contract was followed by Grammavision, the album It's a Jungle in Here was released. After her fourth and best-selling album ( Shack -man, named after the tree house [ engl. " Shack " ] in the forests of Hawaii, where they recorded the album ) and other gigs at the Knitting Factory ( the legendary " Shack- Parties " ) MMW changed eventually to the prestigious label Blue Note Records.

In addition to a collaboration with John Scofield, with whom they had already in 1988 his album A Gogo recorded, Out Louder ( published in 2006 under the name Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood), published the three musicians in the same year the anthology Note Bleu, a collection from their previous six albums for Blue Note Records.
