Melchior Lotter the Elder (1470-1549)

Melchior Lotter the Elder, also Lotther, (* 1470 in Aue, † February 1, 1549 in Leipzig ) was a German printer and publisher.

Importance

Melchior Lotter was the son of Ips typographus Konrad stove and the most respected publisher and printer of the Reformation period. As the first in Leipzig, he printed with Greek letters. In 1511 he introduced the Antiqua.

After he had personally met Martin Luther, he printed after 1517 many of his Reformation writings, including the 95 Theses.

In Wittenberg Lotter in 1519 founded a branch, of which he was wearing his sons Melchior and Michael.
