Mentzelia

Mentzelia laevicaulis

Mentzelia is a plant genus of the family of flowers nettle plants ( Loasaceae ). It contains about 80 species that are native to North, South and Central America. The scientific genus name honors the German physician and botanist Christian Mentzel ( 1622-1701 ).

Description

These are annual or perennial herbaceous plants, subshrubs, shrubs or small trees that are occupied with pungent, but not stinging hairs and grow from a strong taproot. The lower leaves are opposite, the upper alternate, the leaf blades are ovate to triangular- ovate, sometimes pinnate, usually lobed, however, the edge is sharpened to cut.

The inflorescences are complex, terminal, basiton and thyrsenähnlich, occasionally with a long, final monochasium. Before every single bloom frondose two bracteoles. The petals are white, yellow or orange.

The stamens are numerous ( rarely 10), the stamens of equal to strongly unequal size, the outer stamens are occasionally widened or bifurcated at the top, sometimes there are kronblattartige staminodes. The scar is punctiform.

The fruit is a constant under, sessile or stalked capsule and opens the basis of three to seven tabs at the top of the fruit. The seeds are flattened rectangular or sideways. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 9, 10, 11, 14, 18, 27 or 36

Dissemination

The genus is found from Canada to Argentina and radiates down to the Galapagos Islands and the Caribbean. Manifold center is Mexico and the southwestern United States. They settle mostly deserts and semi-deserts, some species but are also found in grasslands and rain forests.
