Meride

Meride (the name is stressed on the first syllable: Méride ) was, until April 13, 2013, municipality in the district of Riva San Vitale, in the district of Mendrisio in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland and is located at the foot of Monte San Giorgio, 7.5 km northwest of Chiasso.

History

Meride 852 is first mentioned as Melene writing. Later it appeared in documents as Melade ( 963), Meredo ( 1443 ) and Merito ( 1591 ) on. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the parish Riva San Vitale and thus to the diocese of Como. Since 1517 Meride is federally. Known plasterers and painters come from this village. They found their work in Germany, Russia and France, returned home in the winter months and embellished their homes. Partly their works can be seen even today. Set back from and above the village there is the San Silvestro church with frescoes from 1690 by Francesco Antonio Giorgioli ( 1655-1725 ). The original Romanesque church was completely rebuilt in the 16th century. The simple parish church of San Rocco is in the village center at Piazza di Mastri Meride and was built in the 17th century.

On April 13, 2013 Meride was incorporated into the municipality Mendrisio.

Paleontological Museum Museo dei Fossili

The Fossil Museum in Meride shows mainly finds from the nearby Monte San Giorgio, which have been collected over the last 30 years. The fossils are over 200 million years old and comes from the time when the then Mendrisio only partially loomed out of the sea. Shown are particularly marine fossils, and specimens of the rich fauna of the Middle Triassic. The paleontologists Bernhard Peyer reached significant finds.
