Metairie is a settlement on community- free area in Jefferson Parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana and suburb of New Orleans. For statistical purposes, the place has been combined to form a census-designated place (CDP). In 2010, Metairie had 138 481 inhabitants.

Name

The original spelling, Metairie, is a French term for a leased farm which paid the landlord with a portion of his harvest, as it was common in this area in the early 19th century.

Geographical data

Metairie is located in eastern Jefferson Parish and adjacent to New Orleans in the east, Kenner to the west, Lake Pontchartrain to the north and Airline Highway in the south. The " 17th Street Canal " forms the border between Metairie and New Orleans.

History

Metairie was first settled by the French in the late 18th century along an area known as Metairie Ridge, a natural dam, which was formed by a bayou.
