Metes (deprecated Varnita; Meteschdorf German, Hungarian Metesd ) is a town in Alba county in Transylvania, Romania.

Geographical location

The community Metes expands with their total of 12 villages in the south of Trascău Mountains in western Transylvania in a hilly area on an area of ​​14.224 hectares. The town lies on Ampoi - a right tributary of the Mureş ( Maros ) and on the National Road (Drum National) DN 74 ( Zlatna - Alba Iulia ), about 16 kilometers west of the county capital Alba Iulia ( Charles Castle ) away. The 1895 genommenene in operation and 1984 redenominated on standard gauge railway Alba Iulia Zlatna crosses the territory of the municipality.

History

Called by the locals La Pietri or Pietrele Gomnuşei - - On the territory of the municipality, in the North of eingemeindeten village Ampoiţa ( Ampoifluß ), in the three large limestone rocks archaeological finds were made which have been associated with the Chalcolithic period.

The place was first mentioned in 1338 under the Hungarian name Metesd. In the Middle Ages the town was a Wallachian village of hearing. During the Revolution of 1848 it came to the territory of the commune ( in Presaca Ampoiului ), fighting between the troops of Axente Sever and units of the Hungarian revolution army.

The residents of metes long dealt mainly with agriculture, especially livestock.

Population

In the 1850 census, lived on the territory of the present municipality of 3,066 people. 2,993 of these were Romanians and 73 Roma. The highest population ( 4,534 ) was achieved in 1941, since then, the population fell steadily. 2002 3.181 people have been counted; 3,165 Romanians, two Hungarians, five German, eight Roma and a Ukrainian. The highest number of Romanians ( 4527 ) in 1941, the Hungarians (49 ) in 1910, the Germans ( 11) 1910 and the Roma (171 ) in 1956 determined. In the censuses of 1880 and 1900 a Slovak, 1900 four, 1977, a Serb and 1900 a Ukrainian ever recorded.
