Metropolitan Borough of Bury

Bury is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester in England. Administrative center is the city of Bury, in about a third of the population lives. Other important towns in the Borough are Prestwich, Radcliffe, Ramsbottom, Tottington and Whitefield. Sister cities are Datong (China), Angoulême and Tulle ( France), Schorndorf ( Germany ) and Woodbury (United States).

The reorganization of the limits and the capabilities of local authorities led in 1974 to form the Metropolitan Borough. Were fused while the County Borough Bury, Prestwich and Radcliffe the boroughs and urban districts Tottington and Whitefield. These administrative units previously belonged to the county of Lancashire.

1986 Bury was in fact a Unitary Authority, as the central government dissolved the superordinate management of Greater Manchester. Bury remained for ceremonial purposes part of Greater Manchester, as well as for individual higher-level tasks such as police, fire and public transport.
