Michael Franks (musician)

Michael Franks ( born September 18, 1944 in La Jolla / California) is an American jazz singer and songwriter.

Frank sang during his high school years folk and rock songs for guitar. He studied contemporary literature at UCLA and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. After he had given at UCLA and Berkeley music lessons, he composed the music for films Count Your Bullets and Zandy 's Bride.

His study of literature had a strong influence on his songs, through his lyrical concept got his music the nickname " Thinking Man's Rock". In the late 1960s he moved to Canada, where he performed as the opening act for Gordon Lightfoot. He worked there for a short time (later Lighthouse ) together with the group Carnival.

In 1973, he released his first album, which includes many other mostly followed by Warner Brothers. Frank has worked together with the blues legends Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, with Flora Purim, Kenny Rankin, Ron Carter, The Crusaders, David Sanborn, Toots Thielemans, and Eric Gale and wrote songs for The Manhattan Transfer, Patti LaBelle, Carmen McRae and The Carpenters.
