Michel Decoust

Michel Decoust ( born November 19, 1936 in Paris ) is a French composer, conductor and music educator.

Life

Decoust began training as a pianist, which he interrupted at the age of fifteen years, to take on the architecture. Finally, in 1956, he returned to music and studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Yvonne Desportes ( solfege and counterpoint), Louis Fourestier ( orchestral conducting ), Georges Dandelot (harmony ), Olivier Messiaen ( musical analysis ), Darius Milhaud and Jean Rivier (composition).

In 1963 he won the Grand Prix de Rome. In 1964-65 he attended courses for new music with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Henri Pousseur and in Basel for orchestral conducting with Pierre Boulez in Cologne. 1967 composed Decoust the experimental polymorphism piece for large orchestra, which premiered led by the Orchestre National de France at the Cathedral of Royan an art scandal.

By 1970, he was among the founders of the Orchestre des Pays de la Loire, in 1972 he founded with Irène Jarsky and Martine Joste the Conservatoire de Pantin, whose director he was until 1976. 1975 Boulez appointed him to head the education department of IRCAM from 1979 to 1991 he was inspector general for music lessons at the French Ministry of Culture. After he had worked until 1994 as Inspector General for the music, dance and drama classes of Montpellier, he returned to 2001 back to the Ministry of Culture.

Was Decoust et al Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (1980) and the Legion of Honour ( 1987) and as an officer of the Ordre national du Mérite (1991 ) excellent. In 1989 he was awarded the Composition Prize of the SACEM.
