Mike Michalske

August Mike Michalske ( born April 24, 1903 in Cleveland, Ohio, † October 26, 1983 in Green Bay, Wisconsin), nicknamed Iron Mike, a U.S. American football player and coach was. He has played as a guard in the National Football League ( NFL).

Playing career

College

Michalske played from 1923 to 1925 at the Pennsylvania State University ( Penn State ). In the first two years he was there mainly as a guard, but had in his third year at the Penn State Nittany Lions move to the position of full backs. In 1923 he was able to move with his team in the Rose Bowl, but had there beaten the USC Trojans the team from the University of Southern California with 14:3. Michalske was named All-American and in 1926 joined the professional sector.

Professional

1926 Michalske joined the New York Yankees. One team that first played for a year in the American Football League ( AFL) was newly established and then home for two years in the NFL. The exceptionally fast, agile and strong Michalske was responsible for the protection of the running backs Red Grange in the team. But Michalske also played in defense and was thus frequently throughout the season on the field ( which earned him his nickname ).

After the team from New York City had fallen into bankruptcy, Michalske gave up part of his salary and switched to the Green Bay Packers. With the team he was in 1929, 1930 and 1931 to win the NFL Championship. 1936 Michalske put to rest, once again around 1937 for one year for the Packers aground.

Coaching career

Michalske Following his playing career as a coach. From 1942 to 1946 he was head coach ( " Head Coach" ) at Iowa State University. His team won 18 of 39 games. Michalske is on the Woodlan Cemetery, Allouez, Wisconsin, buried.

Honors

Michalske is a member of the NFL 1920s All- Decade Team. He was seven times elected to the All- Pro. As the first Guard of football history, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1964. In addition, he is since 1970 in the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame,
