Military units and formations of NATO

As NATO command structure (in short:. NCPs; engl NATO Command Structure) refers to the integrated military command of NATO authorities.

Generally

The command structure under the political leadership at NATO headquarters in Brussels with the North Atlantic Council as a key institution and the NATO Military Committee, as the highest military body. The NCP is complemented by the NATO force structure (NATO Force Structure), which consists of the national armed forces of the Member States and national and multinational HQs of the tactical level.

History

The command structure has been adapted since the founding of NATO in 1949, come back to the military-political situation and during the Cold War consisted mainly of these three Kommandobreichen:

  • Allied Command Europe (English Allied Command Europe, ACE), with Allied Forces Northern Europe (English Allied Forces Northern Europe; AFNORTH )
  • Allied Forces Central Europe ( engl. Allied Forces Central Europe; AFCENT )
  • Allied Forces Southern Europe (English Allied Forces South Europe; AFSOUTH )

Today's organization

Currently it consists of headquarters on three levels. The highest level is formed by the " Strategic Command " (Strategic Commands ): the Allied Command Operations (ACO ), and SHAPE, in Casteau at Mons ( Belgium), and the Allied Command Transformation (ACT ), also SACLANT in Norfolk, Virginia (USA).

ACO under the Supreme Allied Commander Europe ( SACEUR ) is responsible for the management of operations. ACT Supreme Allied Commander under the transformation ( SACT ) is responsible for the conversion and permanent adaptation of the Alliance to new requirements, the so-called transformation.

Allied Command Operations

At the second level, the following two " Operational Commands" (Operational Commands ) are the ACO assumed:

  • Joint Force Command Brunssum ( JFC Brunssum ) in Brunssum, the Netherlands,
  • Joint Force Command Naples ( JFC Naples ), Naples, Italy

The Joint Headquarters Lisbon ( JHC -Lisbon ), Lisbon, Portugal was disbanded in December 2012.

SACEUR is the NATO Airborne Early Warning & Control Force Command ( Naew & CFC ) was assumed, which is stationed in conjunction with SHAPE in Casteau near Mons, Belgium.

Perform the Operational Command, supported by command of the armed forces operations such as SFOR, Operation Active Endeavour, KFOR (each Naples ) and ISAF and the Baltic Air Policing ( Brunssum ).

The tactical level is composed of the Air Forces Command Allied Air Command Ramstein AIRCOM with two Combined Air Operations Centre ( CAOC 's) in Uedem Germany and Torrejon Spain and a Deployable Air Command and Control Centre ( DACCC ) in Poggio Renatico Italy. The Allied Air Command Izmir and the CAOC 's Finderup in Denmark and Larissa Greece were dissolved.

As well as the the Allied Maritime Command Naples ( Naples) command of the naval forces, the Allied Maritime Command Northwood MARCOM, was disbanded in late March 2013.

And since December 2012 the land forces command, Allied Command Izmir Country LANDCOM in Turkey. The former Land Forces Command in Heidelberg and Madrid were released in April and June 2013.

Furthermore, ACO are the headquarters of rapidly deployable corps available, including the Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps ( ARRC ). These belong to a national or multinational headquarters itself is not the NCP, but the NATO force structure.

Allied Command Transformation

ACT are subject to a number of training, testing and research facilities, including the Joint Warfare Centre ( JWC ) in Stavanger, Norway, the Joint Force Training Centre ( JFTC ) in Bydgoszcz, Poland, the NATO Undersea Research Centre ( NURC ) in La Spezia, Italy and the NATO School in Oberammergau.

Other departments

In addition to the Strategic Commands are subordinate to the NATO headquarters some other facilities directly, including the Canada -US Regional Planning Group ( CUSRPG ), the Combined Joint Planning Staff ( CJPS ) in Mons / Belgium and the NATO Defence College in Rome, Italy.
