Miltiades Caridis

Miltiades Caridis (Greek Μιλτιάδης Καρύδης Miltiadis Karydis; born May 9, 1923 in Gdansk, † March 1, 1998 in Athens ) was a German - Greek conductor.

Life

Caridis was born in Danzig, the son of a German mother and a Greek father. He grew up in Dresden until the family moved to Greece in 1938. Caridis began his musical studies at the Conservatory during the war in Athens and graduated after the war at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Hans Swarovsky with the conductor examination.

He began his career at the Cologne Opera and the Graz Opera and conducted seven years at the Vienna State Opera. From 1960 to 1967 he was principal conductor of the Philharmonia Hungarica. Then he conducted from 1969 to 1971, the Philharmonic and Oslo from 1975 to 1981, the Musicians' Orchestra of Lower Austria. As a freelance conductor, he has worked with numerous other orchestras and choirs around the world and participated in major festivals. From 1995, he headed the Greek Radio Orchestra; in February 1998 he suffered during a rehearsal of the orchestra a stroke, he died a few days later.
