Description

Vegetative characteristics

In Minuartia species is annual to perennial herbaceous plants, rarely subshrubs. The prostrate, ascending to erect stems are individually or several together in a herd and are often branched ascending to erect. Their leaves are almost always very narrow, linear or narrowly lanceolate with one or three veins.

Generative features

The flowers are borne singly or in zymösen inflorescences. The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and fünfzählig with double perianth. The top five trockenhäutigen sepals have one or three nerves. The five white, or rarely reddish petals are front rounded or narrowed, but not emarginate or divided. There are two circles, each with five stamens present. The unilocular ovary contains many ovules. There are three pen available.

The narrow ovate or ovate - cylindrical capsule fruits open with three flaps. The seeds are egg -, kidney - or disc- shaped.

Occurrence

The Mierendorff species inhabiting almost exclusively in the northern hemisphere, from the Arctic to the subtropical areas. In the temperate and warmer regions they are from the hill and altitude level found at altitudes of 3800 meters ( dwarf chickweed ). One type is also found in Chile.

The genus name Minuartia was first published in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus in Species Plantarum, 1, pp. 89-90. Type species is Minuartia dichotoma L. The genus belongs to the tribe Minuartia Alsineae in the subfamily Alsinoideae within the family Caryophyllaceae. The genus name honors Minuartia the Spanish physician and botanist Juan Minuart ( 1693-1768 ).
