Miss Porter's School is a the college preparatory school for girls in Farmington, in the U.S. state of Connecticut. The School Foundation currently has a market value of 95 million U.S. dollars.

History

Sarah Porter ( born August 17, 1813 in Farmington, † February 18, 1900 ibid ) was a famous American educator and founder of the prestigious private school for girls.

Sarah Porter was the daughter of the community leader and preacher Noah Porter (1781-1866) and his wife Mehitable " Hetty " Meigs ( 1786-1874 ). She studied at the Farmington Academy and later at Yale College, one of the colleges of Yale University. As a professor she later taught at schools in Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania. After returning to Farmington in 1843, she founded the Girl College Miss Porter 's School, this is one of the first colleges for women in the United States. Sarah Porter was considered an opponent of women's suffrage, but was a supporter of the education of young women. Her older brother, Noah Porter (1811-1892), was the period from 1871 to 1886 President of Yale College.
