Mohammedia

Mohammedia (Arabic المحمدية, DMG al - Muhammadiyah ) is a Moroccan port city on the Atlantic Ocean. The original name of the city was Fedala / فضالة / Faḍāla. In 1959 she was renamed in honor of King Mohammad V..

Location

Mohammedia is located approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Casablanca and about 65 km southwest of Rabat on the Atlantic coast in the region of Grand Casablanca.

History

The exact founding date of the city is unknown. What is certain is that the city was a trading center already under the Almoravids. The harbor was from the 14th to the 19th century traditional hub for European traders but also a refuge for corsairs. 1773 was Sultan Moulay Muhammad III, the Kasbah, a granary, and the white Al- Atik Mosque build.

After the annexation of Morocco by France modern port facilities was by the colonial government in 1913 with the construction started.

Economy

The city is conveniently located at A 3, which connects Rabat Casablanca. She is also connected to the railway network.

In addition to industrial facilities, the port is still today an economic focal point of the city.
