Monk mountain is a market in the Lower Franconian district of Miltenberg, office of the Management Community monk mountain and state- recognized health resort.

Monk mountain is located in the Bavarian part of the Spessart, 13 km from the district town of Miltenberg, 30 km from Aschaffenburg, 69 km from Frankfurt and 76 km from Würzburg.

Name

Etymology

It is often mistakenly assumed that the name monk mountain has something to do with a monk and a mountain. He is made up of the old words Manno and births. The Middle High German word BIRTHDAY means houses or buildings. Manno is a very old personal name. Mannogebûr therefore are the houses of Manno.

Monk mountain

When the place has arisen today can no longer be reconstructed. However, the village name suggests an old Franconian settlement. The place was originally ( circa 800 AD) a post station on the way from Würzburg Wertheim to Aschaffenburg. With the name Manno births is the building of Manno, the first owner of this station meant. The village Schmachtenberg was first mentioned in 1298 and belonged to the taverns of Klingenberg. This year it was sold to the Teutonic Order. Ecclesiastical Schmachtenberg until the beginning of the 17th century a branch of the parish of St. Michael in Grub rings. This period ended when the village Grub Ingen in the plague went down. From about 1630 Schmachtenberg then belonged ecclesiastically to Klingenberg and in 1740 the parish Röllbach. In the 700 years from 1298, it was beyond any other special events that have been historically documented. The forest was the main source of income of the municipality. Until after the Second World War Schmachtenberg was still dominated entirely by agriculture. On 1 May 1978, until then independent municipality was incorporated into monk mountain. 1997 Schmachtenberg was increased by a new housing estate. The place has an active club life and currently has about 450 inhabitants.

The magnificent small Baroque church of Johann Martin Schmitt from Miltenberg was built in 1759-1761 and 1866 extended to the choir. It has a high altar, in Rococo style, and more in the style of matching features.

The main attraction of the market is the pool Spessartbad renovated in 1992. Other recreational facilities offer public tennis courts, a bandstand and a water stream.

The recognition as a health resort and the location in the Spessart monk mountain is a popular destination for hikers and tourists. In and around monk mountain exist 90 km of designated trails.

In addition, numerous attractions are nearby, such as Mespelbrunn Castle, the county town of Miltenberg and the wine town of Klingenberg.

Curiosities

The monk Berger are known for their law-abiding. They referred to in the past coming back to their old rights ( Weisthum of 1396 ). They said the monk Berger farmers after, " they would hang the Code on the plow ." That brought the monk Unterbergern the nickname - Ortsnecknamen "law books" one. Today, there are monk mountain a theater group founded in 1987, which calls itself " The law books ."
