Monmouth Railway

The Monmouth Railway was a British railway company in Gloucestershire in England.

History

The Company received on 24 May 1810 concession to build a horse railway from the mines Howlers Slade in the Forest of Dean Coleford and after May Hill at Monmouth. The share capital consisted of 22,000 pounds, divided into shares at 50 pounds. The track with the track gauge of 1067 mm (2 ft 6 in ) was opened on August 17, 1812, but was only finally completed in 1817. After the decline of mining in the region around Coleford, the track was used from 1850 onwards little. 1853, the company was acquired by the Coleford, Monmouth, Usk and Pontypool Railway, which in Wyesham Wharf einrichtete 1857 a transition.

1883 established the Coleford Railway on the existing roadbed a standard gauge railway line between Monmouth and Coleford.
