Monnette Sudler

Monnette Leigh Sudler (as Monnette Goldman, born June 5, 1952 in Philadelphia ) is an American Jazzgitarristin (also vocals, composition).

Life and work

Sudler, who comes from a musical family, first received piano lessons. At the age of fifteen, she switched to guitar and initially was taught by her father, Truman W. Sudler, then developed in the folk direction, before they switched to jazz. After she studied at the Combs College of Music composition and arrangement, she graduated in 1970 and 1971, the Berklee School of Music; at that time she was a professional musician. They first played at the Sounds of Liberation by Jamal Khan, later with Sunny Murray's Untouchable Factor. After she had performed with the big band of Sam Rivers at the Newport Jazz Festival, they could record their 1977 debut album Brighter Days for You; the following year she toured with her own band through Europe. Furthermore, one of Philly Joe Jones ' project Dameronia ( reminiscent of the music of Tadd Dameron ) and, with whom she performed for Change of the Century Orchestra in 1987 at the Berlin Jazz Festival. She has collaborated with musicians such as Grover Washington Jr., Steve Turré, Reggie Workman, Cecil McBee and Hamiet Bluiett. In addition to jazz with her ​​quartet or quintet also plays blues with her ​​Monnette Sudler Blues Express. In 2003 she completed an additional training at Temple University. Prizes and awards

Sudler received the David P. Richardson Achievement Award and the Shirley Chisom Award of the National Political Congress of Black Women.
