Uri Caine
Uri Caine ( born June 8, 1956 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American musician ( piano, keyboards ) and composer who is at home both in jazz and in classical music.
Life
Uri Caine comes from an intellectual Jewish family, and went into his childhood to schools with Hebrew language of instruction. This linguistic environment was also maintained by the parents who made a point to talk to him and his siblings in Hebrew. His father, Burton Caine, was a lawyer and then switched to the teaching activities of the Temple Law School (Philadelphia ). His mother, Shulamith Wechter Caine is a poet and teaches at Drexel Institute ( also Philadelphia ).
Uri Caine began playing piano at the age of seven years, with twelve years he was for four years a pupil of French pianist Bernard Peiffer, who was at this time in Philadelphia. There he studied composition with George Rochberg and George Crumb at the University of Pennsylvania, during which time he played in local jazz clubs. After finishing school, he traveled to Israel to see whether he could imagine to live there, but finally he decided because of he had hoped possibilities of the New York jazz scene for this city, where he played then with musicians such as Barry Altschul, Don Byron, Dave Douglas, Sam Rivers converge.
Since 1999, Uri Caine is married to the sculptor January Galperin, which he knows since his student days.
Works
1985 Caine was on the album " One Minute Of Love" the Rochester / Veasley band ( with John Zorn and James Blood Ulmer) made its debut in the recording studio. As a leader, he recorded albums for JMT since 1993 and, after its closure, for the quasi- successor Winter & Winter. Gustav Mahler and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart dedicated work arrangements
In Caines Mahler project is a deconstruction of his compositions ( " Primal Light / Primal Light" and " Gustav Mahler in Toblach " ) or an approximation of his work with his own compositions ( "Dark Flame" ).
" Uri Caine Ensemble plays Mozart" builds on this concept, known works of Mozart are " jazzy " and backed by scratching. Besides a number of other Winter & Winter musicians is represented on this album also Nguyên Lê.
Johann Sebastian Bach - Goldberg Variations
On the " Goldberg Variations " project only a small part comes from the original, most titles, however, are new, mostly also " variations " named compositions stylistically back and herwandern between classical, jazz, klezmer, blues, Latin and Electronica. 40 musicians and the Kettwiger Bach Ensemble were involved in this work.

- On "Love Fugue " is Mark Ledfords ( longtime singer of the Pat Metheny Group) and the chanting David Moss ' adapted Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe cycle for the English song.
