Monster is the ninth studio album by the American rock band REM It was released on 26 September 1994 and is the successor of Automatic for the People.

With Monster, the band returns to its predecessors Automatic for the People and Out of Time, which had a much more pop sound to their roots. The music is mostly located in the area alternative rock, guitar riffs are distorted more often than on its predecessors. The song Let Me In is dedicated to a friend Stipes, namely the 1994 deceased Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. The entire album was also dedicated to the late musician and actor River Phoenix. Its sister Rain contributed backing vocals to Bang and Blame. Also, in the song Stipe worked with ' sister Lynda, Lou Barlow and Ané. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth contributed to Crush with Eyeliner in the background vocals.

Reception

Robert Palmer of Rolling Stone awarded four and a half out of five stars. Stephen Thomas Erlewine awarded at Allmusic two and a half out of five stars. He described the album as the long-awaited rock album; it rocke just not as expected ( "Monster is indeed REM 's long - promised " rock "album, it just does not rock in the way one might also expect. ").
