Montipora

Typical leaf- growing Montipora

The Montipora are the two tarte richest genus of stony corals ( Scleractinia ). All Montiporen live in the tropical Indo-Pacific.

In the German is often called the Montipora because of their tiny polyps pore corals. Like most other stony corals they live in a symbiotic relationship with algae ( zooxanthellae ) that supply the Montiporen with nutrients. They are therefore dependent on dark locations.

Most Montipora species cover crust- shaped underground or form foliated structures. but there are also some species such as Montipora digitata that grow branches. The number of species is unknown, as in the Acropora.

Montiporen can also be cultivated in well-kept marine aquariums. By fragmentation of larger colonies they can be easily propagated artificially Meanwhile, there are many coral breeders, multiply the Montipora and try if possible to get colored shapes. Today it is no longer necessary to import from Montipora coral reefs.
