Montmahoux

Montmahoux is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Montmahoux is located on 731 m above sea level, about 17 kilometers southwest of Ornans and 28 km south of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the Jura, on a plateau at the eponymous Mont Mahoux, east of the deep Taleinschnitts of Lison with the Source du Lison and south of the plateau of Amancey.

The area of ​​6:52 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The central part of the area occupied by the undulating plateau of Montmahoux that an anticline formed in the Jurassic geological- tectonic point of view and is oriented towards the west southwest- east-northeast, according to the strike of the Central Mountains in this region. This broad ridge is divided by the valleys of the Boz and another creek. Southwest of the village there is the Mont Mahoux, which represents the highest point of the municipality with 827 m. Further to the west of the ridge drops down to the deep transverse valley of the upper Lison, the municipal boundary always runs in the upper slope area. The southern boundary is located on the crest of Cote Brochet ( to 810 m).

Neighboring communities of Montmahoux are Éternoz in the north, and Déservillers Labergement -du- Navois in the east, and Gevresin Crouzet Migette in the south and Nans -sous -Sainte -Anne in the West.

History

The origin of Montmahoux goes back to the founding of the medieval castle in 1259 under Jean de Chalon. Next to the castle in 1262 was the castle of the same spots. In the documents, the name appears Monmaour 1259 for the first time. Over time, the spelling on Castrum Montis Majoris ( 1272 ), Mont Major ( 1276), Montmahou ( 1475 ) and Montmaou ( 1542) transformed to the present name. In 1267, Montmahoux were granted certain liberties, which were further expanded in 1309. Among the Chalon- Arlay to Montmahoux became an important rule.

The castle as well as the village was in 1480 by troops of King Louis XI. destroyed. As a result, the village impoverished. It was repeatedly pulled by wars affected and rebuilt in 1639 after the devastation caused by troops of Duke Bernhard of Saxe- Weimar. Together with the Franche -Comté Montmahoux came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. 1703 the village was affected by a major fire. Since 1993 Montmahoux is a member of the comprehensive 19 villages municipal association Communauté de communes Amancey - Loue - Lison.

Attractions

The village church of Montmahoux was built in the 19th century. From the scanty remains of the medieval castle are only visible. The Mont Mahoux on which a cross was erected in 1914, offers a beautiful panorama over the surrounding area and the valley of Lison.

Population

With 102 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Montmahoux is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 202 persons were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1980s.

Economy and infrastructure

Montmahoux was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture ( crops and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road, leading from Éternoz after Labergement -du- Navois. Further road links exist with Déservillers and Gevresin.
