Mormyrinae

Gnathonemus petersii (top) and Campylomormyrus tamandua

The Mormyrinae are a subfamily of African freshwater fish from the family of mormyrids ( Mormyridae ). In German, they are called depending on body and snout shape elephant fish or mormyrids.

Dissemination

The range of this fish includes all of Africa south of the Sahara and the Nile, but without the capensis. The species- poor genera have smaller distribution areas. Hyperopisus, Genyomyrus and Myomyrus only occur in the basin of the Congo, Paramormyrops only in Cameroon, Isichthys in West Africa except for the Congo and Hyperopisus lives in the area between Senegal and the Nile. Of the species -rich genera Stomatorhinus is restricted to the basin of the Congo and Ogooué.

Features

The members of this subfamily are depending on the type 5.2 inches long and 1.20 meters. Body, head and snout shape are highly variable. The caudal peduncle is narrow, the tail fin is always forked.

Unlike the Subfamily Petrocephalinae they lack the basisphenoid ( sphenoid ) and they have two Orbitosphenoide ( skull bone ). The first beam of the dorsal fin is unsegmented ( Petrocephalinae in the first two ), all other segments. The anal fin has an unsegmented fin ray and more segmented. The nostrils are clearly separated from each other and are located at a greater distance from the eyes. The mouth is terminal or below constantly and is well ahead of the front edge of the eyes. The unpaired fins are variable in position, size and shape. Dorsal fin and anal fin sit far back on the body and are located symmetrically in many cases opposite.

Like all mormyrids have the Mormyrinae the ability to electrical orientation and communication.

System

The Mormyrinae are a subfamily of mormyrids ( Mormyridae ). It includes all Nilhechtgattungen up on Petrocephalus that is basal to the other species and is classified in the subfamily Petrocephalinae.
