Muhammad II of Ifriqiya

Abu l - Gharaniq Muhammad II (Arabic: أبو الغرانيق محمد بن أحمد, DMG Abū l - Ġarānīq Muḥammad Aḥmad b, . † 875 ) was the eighth Emir of Aghlabids in Ifriqiya ( 864-875 ).

Abu l - Gharaniq Muhammad II succeeded his uncle Ziyadat Allah II ( 863-864 ). He took over from his predecessors a consolidated empire with flourishing economy and great prosperity. Thus, the esthete Muhammad II of his extravagance and pomp, the wine and the hunt could indulge. Under Muhammad II the Aghlabids could conquer Malta and force through their raids on the Italian mainland Pope John VIII to pay tribute.

However, it was introduced towards the end of his reign by a caravan of pilgrims from Mecca the plague in Ifriqiya. These and subsequent famines led to significant population losses and weakening of the empire.

Successor of Muhammad II was his brother Abu Ishaq Ibrahim II ( 875-902 ).
