Objective

The objective of MusicBrainz is now far beyond the simple gathering of metadata about Compact Discs addition. Compared to freedb about the MusicBrainz database is much better maintained ( eg, striking with the correct spelling of the name of an artist ) and more extensive. This is also based on a different philosophy in the area of Quality of Service; Entries by users through typically a control which is based on the principle of peer review before they are released to the public.

System

The system records the following information about so-called MusicBrainz IDs and linked.

The base information (artist, songs, albums, etc.) are provided by MusicBrainz public domain available. Additional information is provided under a Creative Commons license that excludes commercial use and publication under the same license requires (CC -NC -SA ).

During the discussion, an Editor can withdraw its processing at any time. Maintains the processing at least 3 votes without a single negative vote, the processing shall be deemed accepted. Does it get 3 votes against and no votes for, it is rejected. After 7 days, a handling will be automatically void and will be implemented, depending on whether it has received more yes or no votes. There are yet no voice after 7 days, the handling is also considered successful.

Other users of the information provided by MusicBrainz include 7digital, Grooveshark, The Guardian and Winamp.

Acoustic fingerprints

To identify specific recordings MusicBrainz uses the open - source project AcoustID that can generate acoustic fingerprints of sound recordings and these unique means of a database server assigns GUIDs. Thus, using MusicBrainz Tagger software -compatible audio files with automated metadata is provided, for example, via ID3 tags or Ogg Vorbis comments.

Initially patented by the company Relatable TRM technique was used ( recursive acronym for TRM Recognizes Music) to create the acoustic fingerprints. Due to various problems with TRM, among others, the server load and at TRM- collisions has been on the MusicDNS technology from MusicIP, AmpliFind later, changed in March 2006, which called PUIDs generated (Portable Unique IDentifier ). MusicDNS was eventually sold to Gracenote, 2011, after it was announced that the service should be set to switch from MusicBrainz began on August 2010, founded AcoustID system.

Cover Art Archive

In April 2012, received the server software support for Cover Art Archive, a collaborative project between MusicBrainz and the Internet Archive. The aim of the project is to make it cover the information recorded in MusicBrainz publications and Releasegroups publicly accessible without being bound by the Terms of Use of a commercial provider. In addition to the images also have information stored about which type of image it is ( for example, a picture of the front, back or even a sticker ).

Adding new images done by users of the project and passes through the usual MusicBrainz for peer - review process. After successfully uploading the images are available both via the web interface of MusicBrainz, as well as via a programming interface. This makes it possible to make the images available in other applications - so for example, supports MusicBrainz Picard since version 1.2 to download these images and can save these embedded together with media files or in this.

Integration into Software

Basically, any program that accesses should be on the freedb protocol on freedb.org, can access the MusicBrainz FreeDB gateway to ( mb2freedb ) on MusicBrainz.

The following are known programs are listed that come from MusicBrainz or have native MusicBrainz integration.

  • Player = playback software. Can often play CDs.
  • CD ripper = program for digitizing / Saving CDs
  • = Tagger program to insert / correct the MP3 data description ( " tags") (Mass Tagger: designed specifically for the processing of multiple files )
  • "Support " means depending on the software the ability to prescribed formats play
