N- ethylmaleimide (NEM) is a derivative of the maleic acid imide. It is used in biochemical experiments, blocking of sulfhydryl groups, with which it reacts spontaneously, at pH values of 6.5 to 7.5. This reaction can be monitored by measuring the decrease in light absorption at a wavelength of 300 nm. This allows the reagents or proteins which would otherwise interfere with the planned experiments are chemically inactivated.
