Nabil Elaraby

Nabil Elaraby (Arabic نبيل عبد الله العربي, DMG Nabil ʿ Abd Allāh al - ʿ Arabī, born March 15, 1935 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian lawyer and since May 2011 Secretary General of the Arab League. Previously, he was after the fall of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak März until May 2011 Minister of Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of Essam Scharafs and 2001-2006 Judge at the International Court of Justice.

Life

Nabil Elaraby completed his studies until 1955 at the University of Cairo and then at New York University, where in 1969 he earned an LL.M. degree and two years later received his doctorate. In 1978 he was one of the Egyptian lawyers who had negotiated the Camp David Accords with Israel.

From 1991 to 1999, Elaraby Egyptian ambassador to the United Nations from 1994 to 2004 he was a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations. 1990 Elaraby was appointed Judge to the Court of Arbitration of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries, 1999 to 2001, he served as a Commissioner at the United Nations Compensation Commission in Geneva. From 2001 to 2006, he was a judge at the International Court in The Hague. Since 2008, Nabil Elaraby partner in the firm Zaki Hashem & Partners in Cairo.

During the revolution in Egypt in early 2011 Elaraby was one of the intermediaries between the protesters and the Mubarak regime. After the fall of Mubarak, Elaraby was appointed on March 6, 2011 as the successor Ahmed Aboul Gheits the new Foreign Minister of Egypt's transitional government. Under Elaraby of Egypt pursued a policy of rapprochement to the Iranian governance and tried to loosen the opening of the Rafah border crossing to the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip.

15 May 2011 Nabil Elaraby was elected as the new Secretary General of the Arab League. He succeeds the Egyptian Amr Musa, who had renounced a further term. Qatar withdrew its candidate for the post of Secretary General. Observers evaluated the choice Elarabys as a signal to strengthen the Arab League.
