Nagercoil (Tamil: நாகர்கோவில் Nākarkōvil [ na ː ː ɡərko ʋil ] ) is a commercial and industrial city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the capital of the district of Kanyakumari. In the city of some 225,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ), mainly Hindus and Christians. Tamil and Malayalam are the main languages ​​handling.

Nagercoil is located in the lowlands between the southern foothills of the Western Ghats and the Indian Ocean coast, just 16 kilometers north- west of Cape Comorin, the southernmost point of the Indian mainland. Thus, it is the southernmost city of India. The nearest big city is the capital Thiruvananthapuram Keralite around 65 kilometers north- west of Nagercoil. By Nagercoil, the river flows Palayaru.

Nagercoil was formerly known as Kottar. The present name derives from an ancient Jain sanctuary, the Nagaraja Temple. The temple, whose name literally means " Lord of the snakes " means ( cf. Naga ), is today a Hindu shrine. In the Middle Ages Nagercoil was under the rule of the Chera, Chola and Pandya. In the 18th century, the Dutch tried to colonize the area around Nagercoil, but were in 1741 at the Battle of Colachel defeated by the troops of Keralite kingdom of Travancore. Until the independence of India in 1947 Nagarcoil remained formally a part Travancores, but which from the late 18th century, British India was under the suzerainty of the British East India Company and from 1858. After independence, the city belonged to the State of Travancore -Cochin. Nagercoil has a significant Christian population. The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kottar as well as of the diocese of the Anglican Church Kanyakumari of South India. It is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, who was active in the 16th century in the area of Nagercoil and also holds the grave of the martyr beatified Devasahayam Pillai.

Today Nagercoil is a major regional trade center for agricultural products from the fertile environment. The industry also relies on the processing of agricultural products, particularly rubber, cotton, coconut fiber, and food.
