Nartkala

Nartkala (Russian Нарткала ) is a city in the southern Russian republic of Kabardino -Balkaria with 31,694 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is situated on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus about 25 km north-east of the Republic capital Nalchik between the rivers Tscherek and Urwan in river system of the Terek.

Nartkala is the administrative center of the Rajons Urwan.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1914 Maisky ( station Kotljarewskaja ) Nalchik. The station of the city is called Dokschukino.

History

The village was founded in 1913 during the construction of the railway line to Nalchik as a station settlement Dokschukino ( Russified form of Kabardinian family name Дохъушыкъуэ / Doh'ushyq'ua ), developed especially from the 1930s into a center for the processing of local agricultural products and was awarded in 1955 under the name of a town.

In 1967 it was renamed the Nartkala ( turksprachig / Balkar fortress for the Narten ).

In Nartkala there is a plant for ethanol, malt and feed yeasts, a glass factory and operations of electrical engineering and food industry ( wine, canned food, dairy ).
