Nathan Cutler

Nathan Cutler (* May 29, 1775 in Lexington, Massachusetts, † June 8, 1861 ) was an American politician ( Democratic- Republican) and 1829-1830 Governor of Maine.

Early years

Nathan Cutler attended Leicester Academy and Dartmouth College. There, he graduated in 1798. After a subsequent law degree, he was admitted to the Bar in 1801, after which he began practicing in Farmington.

Political career

In the years 1809 to 1811 and again in 1819, he was a member of the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. He was also a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of Maine in 1819. In 1828 he was in the Senate from Maine and served as president. As the incumbent governor Enoch Lincoln died on October 8, 1829 in office, according to the Constitution, the Senate President had to end his tenure as governor. Thus Cutler was between October 1829 and January 6, 1830 Governor of Maine. In this short time he could put no political accents. After the end of his governorship Cutler was an elector in the presidential elections of 1832. In 1844 he was a deputy in the State House of Representatives from Maine. Nathan Cutler died at an old age in 1861. He was married to Hannah Moore, with whom he had nine children.
