National Board for Certified Counselors

The National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. and Affiliates ( NBCC ) is an independent U.S. certification organization for professional counselors based in Greensboro (North Carolina ), and about 50,000 members in the U.S. and 40 other countries. The certificates of NBCC are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies ( NCCA ).

History

The organization was founded in 1982 on the initiative of the American Counseling Association ( ACA) as a non-profit organization. While the ACA then concentrated their further work on training, conferences, publications and government relations organizations, NBCC was founded to be active in the field of certification and quality assurance.

Organization and programs

President and CEO of NBCC since 2005, Thomas W. Clawson. He is also President of NBCC International ( NBCC -I), which was established in 2003. NBCC -I maintains close relations with UNESCO and WHO. A process developed by NBCC -I program is the training for Mental Health Facilitator, which is also offered in Germany.

Branch offices are located in Argentina, Mexico, Malaysia, Bhutan, Malawi, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Germany. Seat of the European Board for Certified Counselors is Lisbon, seat of the NBCC Germany IUK Institute in Dortmund.

Another branch of NBCC is the Center for Credentialing and Education, which offers continuing education and quality assurance programs and certificates for other professions, including for the Global Career Development Facilitator ( GCDF ), which is also introduced in Germany.

Certificates

NBCC certified, inter alia, the ' National Certified Counselor ' (NCC ). So far, over 40,000 people acquired the certificate. Condition are, inter alia, a master's degree with evidence of 3,000 practice hours and 100 hours of clinical supervision as well as an exam. This certificate is in some states the condition for recognition as a state- licensed counselor. More certificates exist for the professional fields of Mental Health, Addiction and school counseling ( for paraprofessionals and emergency staff including the Mental Health Facilitator certificate).
