Nehatu ( German Nehhat ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Hanila ( Hanila vald ) in Lääne in Estonia.

Population and location

The village has 28 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is located nine kilometers east of the port Virtsu. The present village was created as a merger of small settlements Virita, Õeküla, Äärepere and Nehatu.

Court

Since 1765, an independent court in Nehatu is documentary evidence. From 1847 he was with the goods of Paatsalu ( Patzal ) and Illuste ( Illust ) in one hand. Last private owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was the aristocratic Baltic German family Maydell. In the courtyard was born Gregor von Bochmann (1850-1930), who later became a professor at the Dusseldorf Art Academy was.

This single storey stone mansion was built probably in the 19th century. It was remodeled in the 20th century to a two story home. The historic architecture is no longer visible.

Nature reserve

The village has the nature reserve Nehatu ( Nehatu looduskaitseala ) given its name, which has existed since 1957. It extends west and south-west of the village center. The over a thousand hectare reserve is used primarily to protect the fen of Nehatu ( Nehatu soo ). There you will find, among other eagles, harriers and cranes.
