Neptune's Staircase

Neptune 's Staircase ( Neptune's Staircase ) is the popular name for a lock in the channel Caledonian in Scotland.

It consists of eight lock segments in a row ( Koppelschleuse ) and is the longest flight of locks in Britain. The entire hub in the eight locks is only 64 feet (about 20 meters ), because the floodgates had to be moved at installation of the canal in the 19th century is still done manually, today the doors are hydraulically driven and you would with a 4 - he commented Koppelschleuse.

A ship requires about 90 minutes to 8 lock chambers at Neptune's Staircase to happen. The lock is one of the largest UK and is controlled by British Waterways.

The structure came from the Scottish engineer Thomas Telford.
