Neuroglobin

  • OMIM: 605 304
  • UniProt: Q9NPG2

Neuroglobin is an oxygen- transporting protein similar to hemoglobin in vertebrates. In humans it is involved in the transport of oxygen in the brain. It is mainly in the frontal lobe, thalamus and subthalamic nucleus expressed. It belongs to the globins.

The mouse -specific and human neuroglobin gene were characterized in 2000. In humans, the neuro- globin gene is located on chromosome 14q21. Neuroglobin is related to the human globins, but has a peculiar gene structure. From sequence analysis revealed that it forms a separate protein family and early in the evolution of multicellular animals ( metazoans ) - before the separation of Urmünder ( Protostomia ) of the Neumündern ( deuterostomes ) - has formed.
