Neuwiedia zollingeri

Neuwiedia zollingeri is a species in the genus Neuwiedia in the orchid family ( Orchidaceae). It originates from Southeast Asia.

Description

Neuwiedia zollingeri grows as a perennial herbaceous plant, reaching heights of growth from 45 to 70 cm. The roots arise both in the soil and above ground to the stem axis. The aerial roots have a diameter from 2.5 to 4 mm and at the ends they are sometimes thickened. Sometimes the roots are hairy. The leaves are lanceolate to linear, their size varies greatly, ranging in length 4-53 cm, in width from 1 to 7.5 cm. The leaf blade contains seven to 55 longitudinal veins, seven of which stand out clearly.

It is formed a terminal, racemose inflorescence. With the variety Neuwiedia zollingeri var zollingeri he is hairless, with 7-9 cm quite short, he carries 40 to 80 flowers. De Vogel reports of flowering plants in February, March and July. The variety Neuwiedia zollingeri var javanica distinguished by the hairy inflorescence is up to 17 cm long and contains 30 to 60 flowers. The coat can vary in glands and glandular hairs loose, the glandular hairs are found mainly on the petals. In this variety the whole year there are about flowering plants. The bracts of the flowers are lanceolate to linear, pointed ending, 10 to 35 mm long and 2-8 mm wide. The flower stalk is 2-5 mm long.

The fruit is a white berry-like, fleshy, with ripe but probably dehiscent capsule fruit. It is round and measures 6-9 mm in diameter, the length is 8 to 10 mm plus a 2 to 3 mm long patch tip. The seeds are round with a diameter of 0.25 to 0.35 mm, and two tiny appendages. Mostly, all flowers develop quickly to fruit, so that the lower part of the inflorescence fruits, at the top still buds and flowers can be seen.

Occurrence

Neuwiedia zollingeri is widespread in tropical Southeast Asia. The variety Neuwiedia zollingeri var zollingeri is restricted to the islands of Java and Sumatra, the variety Neuwiedia zollingeri var javanica settled next to the islands of Java, Sumatra, Borneo and Bali and southern Vietnam. There are colonized 450-1300 meters altitude. The sites are located in forests and streams, with both wet and very dry places occur as locations.

Systematics and botanical history

Neuwiedia zollingeri described in 1857 by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach first time. Neuwiedia javanica was described in 1914 by Johannes Jacobus Smith as an independent species and classified by de Vogel in the rank of a variety of Neuwiedia zollingeri. De Vogel cites the more variety Neuwiedia zollingeri var singapureana, which is led by other authors in the rank of a species.
