NevÅŸehir Province

Nevşehir is a province in the inner Turkey. The name derives from the Persian Nau ( türkisiert Nev. ) for New and Shahr ( türkisiert Şehir ) for city and means Neustadt. The province was established in 1954. It includes the main part of the history area, which is known under the name Cappadocia.

Data

It has a size of 6570 km ² and 280 058 inhabitants. The provincial capital is also called Nevsehir. In the district of Haci Bektas Veli the Alevi Pir Haci Bektas is buried. In Nevsehir today live very many Turkmen. Of the Turkmens are the most Alevis and by the Turks, most Sunnis.

The Nevsehir province is divided into eight counties. The counties are:

  • Kozaklı
  • Nevsehir
  • Urgup

Attractions

The city of Nevsehir is located in the center of the Cappadocia region, in the province are numerous attractions that Tufflandschaft with many examples of the cave architecture in Cappadocia, a variety of subterranean cities ( eg in Derinkuyu and Kaymakli ), rock castles in Uchisar and Ortahisar, the open-air museums of Göreme and Zelve with the fairy chimneys, the caravanserai Sarıhan and many others.
