Band History

The Newsboys were founded in 1985 on the Australian " Sunshine Coast " ( State of Queensland ) in the small town of Mooloolaba Peter Furler and George Perdikis and Sean Taylor. A short time later was joined by singer John James.

At the turn of 1986/1987 they moved to the United States, appearing in 1988 in Australia and America, their debut album Read All About It ( Refuge / Star Song ), which (only at concerts sold then) followed the demo tape He's Coming Back. Since then, albums, videos and books in America were regularly and published worldwide.

The breakthrough came in 1992 with the album Not Ashamed which was nominated for a Grammy in the category " Gospel Rock ". It was the first record of an additional four following, which was produced by Steve Taylor. Taylor wrote also on all the songs on the lyrics and also contributed a rap at. With this work, they established themselves permanently in the CCM scene in the U.S. and acquired in Western Europe, and Australia / Oceania their further breakthrough. So far, followed by more than 22 number-one radio hits at Christian stations in the USA.

Importance

The Newsboys are now one of the longest running and most important and most popular gospel rock bands, not only in North America. You have the Christian pop music decisively influenced by their original, melodic, but particularly idiosyncratic and humorous texted songs. The band members did not conceal their Christian faith, although they were partly criticized by conservative Christian circles for their satires and stage performances. On the other hand, they are considered to be leading the way with their groundbreaking show concepts and tours, they have been widely recognized by readers of the prestigious CCM Magazine's " Best Live Band of the Year ".

The band has already successfully survived countless member changes. The most prominent departure was the end of 1997 John James, to date, singer and frontman of the band. He was replaced by drummer ( and second singer) Peter Furler, who from then on the band largely represented until 2009, he left her to pursue his solo career. Another feature of the band is their rotating, retractable drum kit, where two percussionists at their game - wearing a seat belt - turn upside down. This set was introduced in the early 90s and has been used for the tour of 1998 regularly in concerts in North America and is extremely popular with the fan base.

2000 inflatable concert hall as a so -called "Air Dome" was developed and used with great success on the tour for the album Love Liberty Disco (1999). To crown this concept a traveling Christian music and cultural festival called " Festival Con Dios " was developed from 2001 to 2003. This phenomenon has been reported on the Newsboys and other artists of the Christian influenced pop culture in the cover story of Newsweek magazine in the USA.

Among other popular CCM acts such as Third Day, Michael W. Smith and Rebecca St. James, the band spent - also commercially successful - the so-called worship genre. Here they released two albums in 2003 and 2004.

Band founder and frontman Peter Furler founded in 1999 along with the Newsboys manager Wes Campbell and the Australian friend and businessman Dale Bray Inpop Records record label based in Franklin / Tennessee, USA. Inpop is rapidly since about 2002 shaped the Christian-influenced pop culture in North America, as evidenced by artists like Superchick, Mat Kearney, Shane & Shane or Tree63.

In addition to operating in the music business, the band or its members tried as successful authors of devotional books, development workers ( homebuilding operations in Indians in Mexico) as well as a mediator between cultures and faiths, such as gigs at a Christian- Muslim festival in Morocco ( 2005) and show at a New Age festival in Israel ( 2005).

Since 2009, Michael Tait (formerly dc Talk ) new singer and frontman of the Newsboys.

Critical Appraisal

The band is considered sometimes pejoratively by critics in the United States as so-called Boy Band, the throngs of - attracts teenagers under her spell - particularly female. In Australia and Europe they are known as "serious rock band" against it. More criticism of the group refers to their many radio hits, which earned them the mocking -intentioned predicate " darlings of the Christian radio". In addition, some conservative churches and communities warn of the partially bitingly ironic lyrics (mostly by lyricist Steve Taylor) and their opinion into immoral stage shows. On the other hand, the band is one of the few that can be a huge fan base in churches and communities demonstrate almost all denominations in America, moreover, across generations, such as attending concerts of whole families or parishes.
