Niall, Earl of Carrick

Niall mac Dhonnchaidh (also Niall mac Donnchadha, Niall of Carrick or Neil of Carrick ) ( † 1256) was the second Mormaer or " Gaelic Count " of Carrick ( 1250-1256 ).

Neil was the son and successor of Donnchadh ( Duncan, 1st Earl of Carrick ). He followed this in 1250 as 2nd Earl of Carrick. Neil was 1255 Regent of Scotland and guardian of King Alexander III.

He married in 1234 Margaret, daughter of Walter Stewart, 3rd High Steward of Scotland, by whom he had only one daughter:

  • Marjorie ( Marthoc )

This followed him into Carrick and became the mother of King Robert Bruce. But when the leader of his clan ( ceann ceneóil ) he appointed his nephew ( Lachlan ).
