Niccolò Albergati

Niccolò Albergati OCart (* around 1375 in Bologna, † May 9, 1443 in Siena ) was an Italian cardinal and diplomat.

Life

Albergati was born in Bologna and entered upon a study of secular law in 1395 in the Carthusian Order one. In the Charterhouse S. Girolamo di Casara he became a priest in 1404, 1407 and Prior 1412 visitator the Italian Carthusian monasteries. He supported Pope Martin V in 1417 and was appointed as Bishop of Bologna. He built his home city from a center of learning and sought to bring about reforms in his diocese.

Among various popes Albergati served as a diplomat. In its function as a diplomat, he visited France and many states of Italy. Eugene IV in 1435 he represented at the Congress of Arras.

He was created in the consistory of May 24, 1426 by Martin V. cardinal and then appointed a Cardinal Priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. He was involved as a legate of Eugenius IV in 1433 and 1436 at the Council of Basel, where he defended the primacy of the Pope. In 1438 he opened as President, the Council of Ferrara, which briefly caused a union between the Roman and the Greek Church after his transfer to Florence. In the fall of 1438, he represented the Pope at the Diet of Nuremberg. 1440-1443 Albergati was also archpriest of the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
