Nicholas I, Lord of Mecklenburg

Nicholas I (also Niklot, * before 1164, † May 25, 1200 at Waschow ) was Prince of Mecklenburg since 1178th

He was a son of the Obotritenfürsten Wertislaw, Lord of Rostock.

He fought together with the Danes and Frederick I. against Henry the Lion and led, supported by the Danes, 1183-1185 war against his cousin Henry I. Borwin. This family war in Mecklenburg and the lack of outside assistance procured the Danish King Canute VI. the opportunity to strengthen its position on the Baltic Sea. Thus, Nicholas I and his cousin had to subdue the Danes in 1185 as a vassal. But he got the rule Rostock as a fief. In the war against Adolf III. Schauenburg and Holstein, in alliance with the Danes he fell childless on 25 May 1200 ( or 1201) in the battle of Waschow which assured the Prince of Mecklenburg, the area of the current southwestern Mecklenburg.
