Nicolas-Sylvestre Bergier
Nicolas- Sylvestre Bergier also Abbé Nicolas Sylvestre Bergier ( born December 31, 1718 Darney, the Vosges, † April 9, 1790 in Paris) was a French, Catholic theologian and apologist of Christianity against the famous ( French ) deism and materialism.
Life and work
His family is originally from Flangebouche. His brother, Claude- François ( † 1784) who also lived in Darney and was also literary activities Essai sur l' histoire de la société civile. Nicolas- Sylvestre Bergier studied at the University of Besançon theology and completed his studies with a doctorate degree in this field. In 1748 he became pastor in Flangebouche ( Diocese of Besançon), 1764 Professor in Besançon in 1769 and in Paris canon, canon of Notre -Dame de Paris. He was temporarily Staff at the Encyclopédie of Denis Diderot, confessor of Louis XIV's brother and enemy of Voltaire.
