Nicolò Marcello

Nicolò Marcello (* 1399, † December 1, 1474 ) was from 1473 to 1474 the 69th Doge of Venice. During his reign, the clashes with the Ottomans to Cyprus, Scutari and the Friuli lasted.

Life

Marcello had operated in the Orient trade before he held various important positions in the service of the Republic, including in Brescia, Verona and Udine. He was chairman of the Council of Ten, and consigliere in 1466 procurator ( procuratore di supra). Marcello was married in first marriage to Bianca Barbarigo, sister of the Doge Agostino Barbarigo and Marco, in a second marriage with Contarina Contarini, with whom he had a daughter.

The Dogenamt

In the election he had prevailed against the Doge Pietro Mocenigo later and Andrea Vendramin. In his short reign he devoted himself to the reorganization of state finances. According to him, this time in a new embossed Venetian silver coin Marcello was called. In his will he left a large part of his fortune to charity.

Tomb

His tomb was initially located in the church of Santa Marina and was rebuilt after its destruction in 1818 in Zanipolo. It is a work of Pietro Lombardo.
