Pietro Lombardo

Pietro Lombardo (* 1435 in Carona on Lake Lugano, † 1515 in Venice ) was an Italian sculptor and architect. He is possibly identical with the Steinmetz Pietro da Como.

Life

Lombardo was the son of Martino Lombardo. About Lombardo's early years is very little known in the current state of research.

Beginning in 1464 Lombardo settled in Padua down and worked there until mid / late 1467th Here he created the pomp tomb of Antonio Roselli.

From the summer of 1474 Lombardo was documented in Venice. There he designed the tombs of Doge Nicolo Marcello († 1474 ) and Pietro Mocenigo († 1481 ) in the church of SS Giovanni e Paolo. In St. Mark Lombardo designed the altars in honor of San Jacopo and San Paolo. 1479 was Giovanni Dario, Secretary of the Senate of the Republic of Venice, with the Palazzo Dario Lombardo in order, this was completed by one of his successors in 1487. In 1481 he built the elegant Palazzo Vendramin - Calergi, which is considered a successful example of the early Renaissance. He is considered one of his most important works.

On the construction and design of the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli in the years 1484 to 1489 Lombardo was also instrumental. He then went with his sons Tullio and Antonio Lombardo to Ravenna, where he among other things, the relief on the tomb of Dante executed.

Back in Venice, Lombardo created together with his sons and the architect Giovanni Buora at the Scuola Grande di San Marco. In the spring of 1514 he was entrusted Lombardo with the Office of the head of the guild of stonemasons.

Pietro Lombardo died in 1515 at the age of about 70 years in Venice.
